The company is adding to its line of Satellite Pro systems.

Toshiba is adding several low-cost configurations to its line of Satellite Pro notebooks, including a 15.4-inch model that starts at $699 with a choice of Advanced Micro Devices or Intel processors.

In adding these five models to its Satellite portfolio—the prices range from $699 to $1,149—Toshiba is looking to increase its presence within the United States, especially with mobile workers and small businesses, as well as in specific vertical markets such as education.

In the U.S. market, Toshiba shipped more than 800,000 PCs in the first quarter of 2008, an increase of more than 4 percent compared with the same time in 2007, according to IDC. While not as large as Dell or Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba does rank fifth within the U.S. market, and the company has tried adding more affordable notebooks to its lineup since agreeing to use AMD processors last year.

On the low end of Toshiba’s new offerings—the new notebooks officially went on sale April 22— is the Satellite Pro L300D, which offers a dual-core AMD Athlon 64 TK-57 processor with 1.9GHz clock speed and 512KB of Level 2 cache. It also provides a 15.4-inch display, 1GB of SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM) and 120GB of hard disk drive capacity for $699.

The company is also offering a choice of an Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz T5870 processor and a 160GB hard disk drive, which adds $100 to the base price.

In addition, Toshiba is offering both Microsoft Windows XP and Vista with the L300 notebook, as well as 802.11 a/b/g wireless technologies.

Besides the L300 series, Toshiba is offering the Satellite Pro M300 notebook, which has a 14.1-inch display, an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.10GHz T8100 processor with 1GB of SDRAM, a 160GB hard disk drive, Windows XP and 802.11 a/b/g wireless for a starting price of $999.

The Satellite Pro U400 offers the same base features as the M300, but the notebook offers a more compact 13.3-inch display, which is more suited for road warriors. The starting price for this laptop is $1,049.

Finally, Toshiba is offering the Satellite Pro L350 with a full 17.1-inch display for a starting price of $1,099. The base price gives customers Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processors, a 160GB hard disk drive, 2GB of SDRAM, Windows XP, and 802.11 a/g and draft-n wireless technologies.
